Eureka, California, was so different from Wyoming and the Shade Rasa. The town appeared to be built within the Redwood forest. Enormous trees, their trunks more expansive than I was tall, grew everywhere along with evergreens and other trees. Lush gray-green foliage and soft white and pink wildflowers dotted the landscape. The most significant difference was the lack of monsters.

Considered the Redwood Coast, Eureka had a little of everything, including at the moment a thick and rolling fog.

Crawford and Logan were living in the coastal town. Over the last two weeks, I’d done my best to stalk them from afar. They lived in a ramshackle house in the middle of fourteen acres, which gave them ample opportunities to shift and roam without being seen. Yet neither of them had shifted once since I arrived.

I had worked to stay downwind and far enough away that my scent wouldn’t linger but that hadn’t been necessary. They barely left the house during the day, and when they did, it was to go out and get food or coffee or weed. At night, they were more active, but again it had nothing to do with the wolf blood part of them. They went out to clubs and parties. Came home drunk and frisky.

From my hiding place, I waited for a similar experience to unfold. Sleep came, which often happened in wolf form. It was easier to relax in her skin.

Immediately came the same dream I’d been having the last two weeks.

Mother Earth was there. Sitting beside me, her legs crossed as she stroked the fur between my ears. Oakus, who seemed to grow bigger every day, scampered around the forest happily, excited for all the smells, nooks, and crannies he got to explore.

I watched with hooded lids—content with Mother Earth beside me.

“You have become an expert at killing just as I said you would, but you can be so much more. Your power, when combined, makes you a life bringer, the same as me. Remember that.”

A door slammed from far away, and I woke with a start.

Crawford emerged from the house, heading straight for his black Range Rover. He unlocked the driver’s side door but didn’t get in, staring back at the house. Then he slammed the door and huffed back the way he’d come.

I lifted my head, panting slightly. It was a brisk night but lacked a breeze like I was used to in Wyoming. Not only had I been stalking the men for two weeks, but it’d been that long since I’d shifted back into my human form. Being a wolf was comfortable and easy. And I’d learned quickly not to worry about Crawford or Logan roaming their land.

“Stupid boy,” Crawford said under his breath as he pushed open the house door. “Are you coming or not?” I guessed he was shouting at Logan.

“Why? So I can watch you flirt with some random woman and then screw her brains out in the bathroom.”

“Logan. Baby. Don’t—” His voice was quieter, but there was still hardness in it.
